Computer Science Games Courses Fall 2019

CSCI-538 AR, VR & Mixed Reality - Presentations

CSCI-538 AR, VR & Mixed Reality Fall 2019 presentations & team pages are below.

The syllabus for that class is here.

CHLA - In collaboration with the Children's Hospital Los Angeles we developed two fun VR experiences that gamify breathing and can help children with conditions such as cystic fibrosis or in peri-operative care, that require breathing training, to practice in a motivating and fun virtual environment. The games use the three phases of breathing, inhalation pause and exhalation as intuitive input data to drive gameplay.

Claim the Kingdom - Claim the Kingdom is a VR based survival game. The game starts with the user being trapped in a dark room. Various spells come from different directions cinematically illuminating the room and therefore offering a strong sense of presence as the player tries to first establish the room they are in. The user needs to avoid incoming attacks with their body movements. Any spell that hits them cuts down the illumination around them making the the game slightly more difficult. The goal is to collect enough blue spells in order to reclaim the kingdom.

Climate Change - The Climate Change project explores the use of various immersive and 3D scanning technologies such as AR, VR, Lidar scanning and Photogrammetry to create an immersive journalism story about climate change and how that affects our ecosystem. The project was developed in collaboration with the Annenberg School of Communication and Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and was set around the migration of the exhibited dioramas at National History Museum in the Metaverse. Dioramas can be seen as the VIrtual Reality of 1920’s where taxidermists would use stuffed animals and painted backgrounds over a piece of terrain to display a piece from another continent.

Clueless - Clueless is a first person murder mystery themed escape room game where the player has to collect various evidence from an office building and escape before a bomb goes off. The gameplay is built around a portable handheld scanner that notifies the user about an evidence being within range. Using the portable scanner the player needs to explore the space fast and collect all evidence on time.

Fantasy Hex - Fantasy Hex is a multiplayer tabletop strategy game in Augmented Reality using Magic Leap One. The project was set to push the boundaries of how many interconnected ML one devices can share the same mixed reality gaming environment. Strategy games in MR offer new possibilities for merging digital and physical play spaces and augment the establish rules and practices of board and strategy games.

Fight On - Fight On! is a single-player Virtual Reality shooting game where the player needs to save a baby before it turns into a MONSTER. You play a human being stuck in a weird world - where humanoids and fantasy characters co-exist. The game setting is comical; the characters have distinct animations and sounds which make the experience hilariously crazy.

God’s Eye - God’s Eye is exploring the potential of serious physical and cyber threats in the era of Mixed Reality. What information can someone have access to through the transparent lenses that can potential become a threat to individuals and the society? God’s eye developed a tool for vulnerability assessment of an individual in a generic social setting that allows a user (potentially a criminal) to recognize a persons face and overlay data mined from various public resources, databases and API’s such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, Venmo etc. Using the tool one can combine data from various resources and assess the individual’s vulnerability score before engaging in potential physical or cyber crime activities. The project was developed in collaboration with Symantec and offers insight of potential threats in the near future that could arise from camera equipped MR devices connected to AI powered cloud services.

Incognito - Incognito is a speculative design and engineering project exploring the future of Cybersecurity in Mixed Reality using the Hololens. The project was developed in collaboration with Symantec and visualizes the threats and data privacy issues a user might face while browsing seemingly innocuous websites on the internet and explores various ways for privacy and security protection.

Infinity Wars - Infinity Wars is a virtual reality shooting game where the hero is at the last line of defense between an invading force and the space station. Use guns and shields to fend off asteroids and drones.
http://www-scf.usc.edu/~yashndos/InfinityWars/index.html

The Odyssey - Odyssey is an immersive VR game for the Positron Voyager motion platform chair. The user is playing the role of a space cadet and uses joysticks to control a spaceship and complete all the objectives of a given mission in three phases. The game involves space traveling, precise navigation through meteorites, a landing challenge and the exploration of the surface of a planet using either a giant robot or a space rover, all emulated through the Voyager Positron chair that simulates the feeling and the motion of flying in a spaceship and driving vehicles over a rocky surface.

Project Tranquil - This project explores the potential of using an immersive motion platform such as the Positron Voyager chair to immediately transcend the user into a meditative state and assist them through daily stress and anxiety management. The basic idea is to tranquilize the user through a subtle motion that emulates the rocking of a small boat in the water during sunset. The combination of haptic feedback, music, immersive visuals and the option of a guided meditation voice over, with the subtle rocking of the chair illustrated a dramatic effect in stress reduction and a strong sense of presence.
https://spujari5.wixsite.com/projecttranquilusc

Rush Diving - Rush Diving is a virtual reality game using Oculus Rift where the player experiences the thrill of flying and diving on a magic carpet.
https://rushdiving.wordpress.com

VR Breathing - Running experiments in Virtual Reality is something that interests researchers all over the world. In collaboration with EPFL in Switzerland we developed a virtual lab for researchers exploring wind mechanics and exhalation as a primary input for interaction, using a custom wireless sensor. We developed a back end data acquisition framework that works with various prototypes that researchers can arrange within the lab (eg. blowing candles, making different sounds by blowing in bottles , etc). In this way, we wish to provide a state-of-the-art interface for researchers who are seeking to explore presence, embodiment and agency in VR and make data collection and running an experiment an easier and more accessible process.
